Roman military equipment studies can lead to a great many insights
into the history, structure and development of the Roman army.
Though not seldom mistaken for typological or art historical discussions,
Roman military equipment is an invaluable source not only for
the structure of the army and the fighting techniques of Roman
soldiers. These sources not only offer an insight into the practical
workings of the Roman army, they also help to understand its tactical
and technological development, its internal structure as well
as equipment production and related economic and political questions.
Moreover, in significant numbers, finds of military equipment
help to interpret their archeological context in historical terms.
Thus, they can also serve as sources for the history and development
of the sites where they have been found.

Military
equipment from Zeugma
An ongoing study of all military objects so far
excavated at the site of ancient Zeugma
has revealed a wealth of new information, as comparatively few such
finds have hitherto been published from the eastern part of the
Roman empire. One preliminary result based on the vast majority
of the Roman military objects excavated over the years by a number
of international and Turkish teams in the area of the ancient city
concerns the question whether or not Roman soldiers were stationed
within the city itself. There are also clear indications of combat
and destruction within the city around the mid third century AD.
Another, more densely spread and diverse group
of military finds was recovered from the field 'At Meydani'. This
field had been occupied on several occasions by Roman expeditionary
forces from other parts of the empire. The continuing investigation
of this unique area therefore also bears great potential for the
study of Roman military equipment as well as many related questions.

Military equipment from Forum Claudii
Vallensium
A complete study of all hitherto known Roman
military objects from Forum Claudii Vallensium / Octodurus (Martigny,
Switzerland) has also revealed many new and exciting results!
Topics of great historical importance connected to this study
include the military garrison and the imperial administration
of the small province of the alpes Graiae et vallis Poenina.
In particular, this study raises the question whether Forum Claudii
Vallensium had a permanent or a temporary military unit stationed
within the settlement.
