No other organized human activity has determined
the history of mankind as much as warfare. War, the threat of
war, the preparation for war, the measures taken to avoid it
and the consequences wars have entailed, shaped international
relations, led to social, economic and constitutional changes,
gave rise to powerful and influential leaders, and sparked progress
in science and technology — and led to the cruel dearth
of countless individuals.
The memory of battles, wars and war heroes
has created myths and legends, inspired art, literature and
music, and shaped cultural identities. The fascination by the
intellectual genius of great military leaders and the appalling
brutality of organized bloodshed raises fundamental questions
of human psychology and ethics.
Warfare is an ever recurring universal phenomenon.
Its history throughout all periods, including its many aspects,
i.e. Military History is central to the history of all mankind!
It is essential, therefore, to bring
light to all aspects of Military History in order to understand
both the past and the present.
