About Us
What we do

At the current early stage of our development, the MAVORS-Institute has decided to concentrate its research and activities on the military history of imperial Rome. As soon as funding allows and opportunities arise we plan to expand into other areas of Ancient Military History. It is our goal to eventually contribute to all areas and periods of Ancient Military History. For questions and proposals please contact us!

The MAVORS-Institute carries out and supports international research projects in Ancient Military History. It undertakes and supports archaeological fieldwork as well as library based research and thereby furthers subject-related interdisciplinary approaches and expert collaboration. The Mavors-Institute brings to light new sources and evidence in the field of Ancient Military History, analyses and evaluates them, puts them into their respective historical context and publishes the results. We take pride in using innovative approaches and up-to-date technologies.

The MAVORS-Institute organizes international conferences on varying subjects and thus offers a platform for the international community of scholars to discuss the results both of the Mavors research projects as well as of other research results in the field of Ancient Military History. The Mavors-Institute publishes the proceedings of these conferences.

The MAVORS-Institute publishes the Mavors series as well as a yearly bulletin. The Mavors-Institute strives to publicize its own activities and results as well as other relevant research in the field of Ancient Military History with the media, and organizes or supports exhibitions.

The MAVORS-Institute contributes particularly within the context of its field-work to the local development of the regions concerned by hiring and buying locally (workers, machines, material etc) whenever possible, and by increasing the attractiveness to tourists of these regions by furthering the understanding of the local history. It also participates in the continuing education of local scholars within the framework of its international field projects.
