Consultant
Prof. Dr. Christoph B. Rüger, born
in 1937, studied Classical Philology, Classical Archaeology, Ancient
and Medieval History, and Philosophy at the University of Bonn-Germany
and the University of Toronto-Canada. From 1956 to 1965, during
vacations and spare time, Prof. Rüger constantly engaged in
practical archaeology on excavations of The National Museum of Canada
(today: Museum of Man, Ottawa), Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn, and
the German Archaeological Institute, Madrid.
1965: Dr. phil at Bonn ("opus valde laudabile").
Thesis: GERMANIA INFERIOR - Untersuchungen zur Territorial- und
Verwaltungs- geschichte Niedergermaniens in der Prinzipatszeit.
(= vol. 30, 1967 of the Beihefte der Bonner Jahrbücher).
1965-73: Excavations as employee (scientific staff) of the Rheinisches
Landesmuseum Bonn at Krefeld (Roman auxiliary fort of Gelduba. Cf.
publications list nos. 2, 12) and at Xanten (CUT-Colonia Ulpia Traiana,
insulae 3, 27, 33. Cf. publications list nos. 8, 13, 16, 17, 19,
22, 28).
Further excavations include:
- Tarragona-Centcelles: Late Roman villa site and 4th cent. AD mausoleum,
1963- 1965 (cf. list of publications nos. 1, 7, 10).
- Krefeld-Gellep (Gelduba), 1967-68 (cf. list of publications nos.
2, 12).
- Lambaesis-Algeria, 1969-1973: Excavation of the fabrica in the
fortress of legio III Augusta (unpublished).
- Chemtou-Tunisia 1980-85: excavations under the Nymphaeum square
of Col. Iulia Aug. Numidica Simitthus with the aim to find the center
of the preceding Numidian town. (A publication with the German Archaeological
Institute, Rome is in preparation).
- Zeugma-Turkey: 1999-2002 Consultant to the Swiss Zeugma Excavations
(now the Mavors Zeugma project) with
continuing cooperation.

Bonn, holding double post as Head of the Ancient Monuments Board,
Rhineland from 1973 to 1986.
- 1983-1991: President, The German Museums Association (Deutscher
Museumsbund).
- Late 1991: early retirement on reasons of ill health.
- since 1985: Professor honorarius of History and Archaeology of
the Roman Rhineland (lecturing obligations since 1978) at Bonn University.
