Dr. Jürg P. Ewald, born in 1938, studied
Archaeology, Prehistory, Latin as well as German Philology and Anthropology
at the University of Basel. From 1968 to 1998 he was Head of the
State Department for Archaeology of the Swiss Canton of Basel-Landschaft
and Director of the Kantonsmuseum, Liestal. From 1970 to 1995 Dr.
Ewald was also responsible for all archaeological investigations
as well as the museum and the conservation studios at the extensive
Roman site of Augusta Raurica (Augst, Canton Basel-Landschaft) including
the late Roman legionary camp of Castrum Rauracense (Kaiseraugst,
Canton Aargau) and many other smaller Roman sites in the Canton
of Basel-Landschaft. He is a co-founder (1974) of the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft
für Archäologie des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit in der
Schweiz (SAM)”. He is also a former board member and president
of the Swiss Society for Prehistory. Furthermore he is (since 1983)
a Honorary Member of this society as well as of the Naturforschende
Gesellschaft Basel-Landschaft (since 1999). He was a co-editor of
several series of archaeological publications ("Forschungen
in Augst", "Jahresberichte aus Augst und Kaiseraugst";
"Archäologie und Museum"; "Archäologie
der Schweiz"). From 1969 to 1997 he was the president of the
"Interkantonale Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Anthropologie".
Since 1999 Dr. Ewald is a free-lance archaeologist and a scientific
publisher and writer.
With several decades of relevant
experience in the field Dr. Ewald is an expert in Roman archaeology.
Dr. Ewald is currently heading the project “The
Roman Army at Satala". He is also assisting in the "Roman
Army at Zeugma" project.
