Dr. Martin Hartmann,
born in 1943, studied and later taught Archaeology and Prehistory
at the University of Zürich. From 1971 to 1993 he was Head
of the State Department for Archaeology of the Swiss Canton of Aargau
and Director of the Vindonissa-Museum, Brugg. During this time Dr.
Hartmann was responsible for all archaeological investigations at
the legionary fortress of Vindonissa and many other Roman military
sites in the Canton of Aargau. He is a co-founder of the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft
für die provinzial-römische Forschung in der Schweiz (ARS)”
and of the “Inventar der römischen Fundmünzen der
Schweiz”. He is also a board member of the “Schweizerische
Numismatische Gesellschaft” and a former board member and
president of the Swiss Society for Prehistory, a “Korrespondierendes
Mitglied des Deutschen Archaeologischen Instituts” and of
the “Oesterreichisches Archaeologisches Institut”. Since
1993 Dr. Hartmann is a free-lance archaeologist and co-editor of
the “ Schweizer Münzblätter der Schweizerischen
Numismatischen Gesellschaft” He has also worked on several
post-excavation projects and assisted in setting up and establishing
the conceptual design of the Chemtou-Museum,
Tunisia.
With many years of relevant experience in the field
Dr. Hartmann is a leading expert in Roman military archaeology.
His research topics focus primarily on the history and the archaeology
of the imperial and late Roman army. In particular, this includes
topics on Roman military architecture and equipment, numismatic
studies, and the Roman army on the Rhine and Euphrates frontiers,
as well as in North Africa.
Dr. Hartmann is currently responsible for the "Rome’s
Eastern Frontier", "The Roman
Army at Zeugma" and "Roman
Army Equipment" projects. He is also assisting in “The
Roman Army at Satala” project .
